The Royal Family of Voss

Fermenta has a capital, and the capital has rulers. The Royal Family of Voss has held the throne of Brewfall for as long as the city has stood through many generations of Voss’. The Wizards' Order operates within the city with the Voss family's approval, and the arrangement has held cleanly for years… the Wizards handle the craft, the Voss’ and their high council of elders called “The Head” handle the roads and the walls, and both sides stay in their lanes.

But the Voss family maintains its own Royal Guard… The Briteguard, and the Guard's charter includes what the Wizards' Order does not: the protection of everyday Fermenta from the unusual.

The Turbidity Variance Authority

The Turbidity Variance Authority (the TVA for short), was established by the Voss family after the Western Warlock's arrival made clear that things could come through the Gate that were not there before. The Order documented them. The Voss family decided someone should be able to catch them.

The TVA's mission is simple. They do not manage practitioners or investigate the craft. They apprehend and contain all multiversal entities… creatures, objects, artifacts and occasionally people that have crossed through the Gate and cannot safely be left to their own devices in Fermenta. TVA outposts sit around Brewfall, at Hopreach Grove near the Gate itself, and along the misty edges of the country between Hazies and the northern roads.

Their relationship with the Wizards' Order is functional but not warm. The Order sends explorers through the Gate. The TVA cleans up what comes back through it. In the TVA's view, one of those groups is making the other's job harder. The Brewmage and The Head have an understanding about this. It has held so far.

The Commander

The Hazerusher was the first commander the Voss family appointed to the TVA, and he has held the post since the Authority was founded. He was a Briteguard captain before that, then a special-detail officer, then, for a short while, an administrator. He is built like something the TVA might be sent to apprehend, and he was tapped for the job largely because of it.

He wears a full kit of muted blue plate armor in the Voss family colors, and he carries two things into the field with him. The first is a long, blunt club forged from a repurposed Underforge stack pipe… brass-and-steel, heavier than most men can lift with one hand. The second is a sealed brass-and-glass vessel roughly the size of a growler, football-shaped, tucked under his arm.

The vessel is called the Hazehold. It was forged by the CitruSmyth at the Brewmage's request, in the earliest days of the TVA, to give them a way to handle whatever came through the Gate without needing to raise a hand to it. The Hazehold draws the essence of a multiversal entity (threat or ally), out of its physical form and holds it safely, glowing softly through the glass. From there it is returned to the TVA's secure hold beneath Brewfall, where the essence is archived, questioned, or, when appropriate, released back through the Gate.

Most multiversal entities do not know what the Hazerusher is until they are already inside the Hazehold.
